Diligence and Setting Goals

By Vicki 11 Comments

hiding-hyacinth

My theme for this year is diligence. I’ve had a few posts rolling around in my head regarding my theme, how things are going, etc, but they never really made it to paper or blog. The first quarter of the year went well. I was working diligently to get into a rhythm for my Bible reading and prayer time.

Then April started. Nothing grand or tragic happened. I just fell short of my goals for this important area in my life.

Do you know what happens this weekend?

We start a brand new month. For the first time, I’m going to participate in a project called 3 in 30. Basically it is all about breaking down your bigger goals into chunks that can be met in 30 days. You set 3 goals that you can meet in 30 days. Simple.

I was tempted to throw in some blog or business things, but decided to keep first things first. So here are my 3 goals for 30 days in May.

1.  Lose 3 pounds. I’d like to lose 30 pounds by my 30th birthday. I have 11 months. I keep telling myself that if I start RIGHT NOW, it is less than three pounds per month. Totally doable. Procrastination is my foe when it comes to most goals. “I have all week to get this project finished.” “I have 10 years until my 10th high school reunion”…gone. I don’t want to let this one pass me by. Three pounds is my first baby step. By the way, 30 pounds less of me will be less than I weighed when I graduated high school (don’t worry, I can spare the 30 pounds), which will be quite awesome.

2. Read one chapter in Proverbs daily. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs and 31 days in May, a perfect fit. I like reading Proverbs, it is to-the-point. This is my “easy” goal. The challenge will be to actually do it daily. I tend to skip days here and there, then play catch up in my Bible reading plans.

3. Serve two vegetables with every dinner I cook at home. We need more veggies in our life. That is all this is about. I’m pretty sure it will help with goal #1, too.

What goals do you have in mind for the fresh, new month ahead of us?

Great goals. I’m going to try to get mine up tonight on my blog. I was tweaking and fixing my blog last night trying to make it pretty, lol. I’ll be 30 in June. I all of a sudden feel old. Look forward to hearing if you meet your gaols by the end of May we are all cheering you on.

I read your post and tried commenting, but I needed a Blogger account which I don’t remember my password to currently, lol.

Your goals are great. I’ve found my kids to be great accountability partners. 🙂

Great goals! I’m glad you are joining us! I like reading a chapter of Proverbs a day too. I’ve done it several time (although I always seem to miss days!) and really enjoyed it. 🙂

Proverbs is full of everyday wisdom. I like reading it aloud to my kids, too.

What a nice reminder to pause and then move forward one minute one hour at a time. I’ve gotten into the habit of keeping my big goals quiet (away from dream squashers) and my little goals vocal (tasks that are doable and enjoy quick success – especially when there is friendly accountability – ata boy/girl) . Thanks for the reminder Vicki – blessings!

Thanks, Kevin. I try for a combo like you. I announce some, keep others private. Works for quite a few reasons. Blessings to you and yours!

“Procrastination is my foe when it comes to most goals.” Oh my yes! I took last month off from having set goals (due to all the changes in the 3in30 Challenge and my offline schedule), but March was all about the waiting until the last minute to complete my goals. I think I definitely need to set daily/weekly deadlines in order to see my goals completed on time! 🙂

So glad you’re joining us this month!

I’ve taken this 3 goals thing seriously. It’s quite genius, this 3 at a time thing. I’ve set 3 weekly to dos for a few of the areas I want to work into my daily life a little better. I’m fleshing it out still, but it is working very nicely so far. 🙂

I’m glad to be a part of the community!

[…] I’m working on fitting reading aloud into our schedule in a way that fits naturally. The kids and I started reading Colossians yesterday at lunch. I stink at routine, but I’m working on this (pretty much constantly). […]
